Ruth,
I was in Christchurch 6 months ago, and your city is absolutely beautiful. The amount of aftershocks is not rare, but the size is surprising to us. Thank you for your comments. Being in the "Ring of Fire" is challenging.

Our purpose there was to build Tsunami Alert Systems for several cities. Yours was a main one because of the low-lying areas on your immediate coastline, allowing so much damage in 1960 because of that Tsunami. We did not get much response from your city, as most didn't remember the 1960 Tsunami. We had better luck in Dunedin and Wellington.

We hope all returns to normal soon. It took 13 years for that to occur after 1960. Best of Luck!

I live in Christchurch 5 kms from the epicentre of the 7.1 (7.4) mag earthquake on 4 September 2010. Our house was jolted severely for 30-40 seconds. We had minor damage and we are only 5 kms from the epicentre...however 25% of eastern suburbs suffered severe liquifaction destroying roads, houses and land. NO ONE WAS KILLED> what a miracle. Our central city suffered badly with historic buildings being destroyed which werent earthquake strengthed. 3 months later we have lived through 3700 aftershocks of which 151 were 4+ mag. and 13 were 5+. refer http://quake.crowe.co.nz/

Sandra, there have been thousands of aftershocks, as there always are. But, only a few have been huge. Go to http://opusa.org (our favorite OPERATION USA). These guys have been there since the beginning and will be there long after the World forgets. And, the money and services get there like no other charity we've watched.

Thank you for your post.

I have been wanting to donate to the Chile earthquake relief efforts since the initial news of the quake was reported by the news media and have been tracking the continuing quakes in Chile on the Internet.
However, I have heard no information on the continuing quakes in Chile or how to donate from the news.

I believe that with the uprising in earthquake activity in the past few monthes, the earth's tectonic plates are coliding along their lengths and we still have much more devistation on the way.

Look at the geographical map of the recent quakes in magnitude and location. You will notice that all of this points to one large quake yet to come.

The San Andres fault along the west coast, has been severly weakened by their last few quakes, and the quakes around the fault, such as the quakes in haiti and chile. One would predict that the next quake would be along the san andres fault, and around the magnitude of 9.0.

The majority of the wild life in the west coast has begun to flee east as of 2 days ago. I still have yet to see a bird in the sky today after i noticed the large flock retreating east. I live in California and I am taking precautions as we speak.

Gerald is right so far. The Tsunamis have not been severe, as thought would occur. But the earthquake in Chile is beyond imagination. 80 times stronger than the Haiti Killer? Early reports of death are premature as they can be. The toll will be huge, I am afraid. CG

The devastation they can't even begin to know this soon. Too early. I pray Chile will receive quick help and that the Tsunamis amount to nothing. Gerald

Haiti earthquake is a major killer, as we are learning. So many factors figure in to the equation of what differentiates a tremblor to a major killer. We pray for the families and friends of the victims.
